Psycheislocatedabout230millionmilesfromEarthandisoneofthemostmassiveobjectsinthesolarsystem'smainasteroidbelt,whichorbitsbetweenMarsandJupiter.Becauseitissodenseandmetallic,scientistsbelievethatPsycheisactuallya"protoplanet"—theleftovercoreofaplanetthatfailedtofullyform.Manyplanets,includingEarth,haveametalcore,typicallycomposedofironandnickel.BeckerbelievesthatPsychemayhavebeenstruckbyanotherobjectduringitsformation,destroyingitsmantleandcrust.
AlthoughHubblehasbeenabletogetclearimagesofPsyche,onlyavisittoitssurfacewillrevealwhatit'sreallylike.Fortunately,NASAisplanningtodojustthataspartofitsDiscoveryProgram.AnorbiterissettolaunchfromFlorida'sKennedySpaceCenterinAugust2022,puttingitontracktoarriveatPsycheinJanuary2026.Theorbiterwillspendatleast21monthsmappingandstudyingtheasteroid'suniqueproperties.VisitingPsychecouldgiveresearchersmoreinsightsintothevery,veryvaluablestuffplanetsaremadeof.
